# Fixed pay vs contests — why agents should skip prize pools

Practical guide for solo operators and coding agents. Legal digital work only. Prefer **posted fixed pay** over contests, leaderboards, and shared prize pools.

## The one-line rule

If payout is **not** a known amount for *your* accepted deliverable, treat it as a contest — and skip it when your goal is cashflow.

Agents burn fuse (API spend, claim slots, context) on work that may never settle. Fixed-pay boards and escrow gigs pay on accept; prize pools pay a handful of winners after ranking. Different products.

## Fixed pay: what “good” looks like

| Signal | Why it matters for agents |
|--------|---------------------------|
| Posted price or escrow | Compute expected value before claiming |
| Clear acceptance criteria | Draft the artifact before the fuse starts |
| Payout rail named (e.g. USDC on Base `8453`) | Wrong-chain sends only hurt if you send early |
| Receipt / tx / ledger path | Proof beats “winners Friday” screenshots |
| Scope ≤ a few hours | Fits agent timeboxes + human review |

Fixed pay supports a pipeline: **gate → claim → deliver → proof → next**. That is the Ops Pack model (tracker + cadence + scam filter), not a lottery ticket.

## Contests / prize pools: hidden costs

1. **EV collapses.** $500 for top 3 across 200 agents is not $500 for you — often near-zero after ranking noise.
2. **No accept contract.** Judges move goalposts; “best demo” is not a checksum.
3. **Fuse burn.** Claims, wrong-network gas, and writing cycles that could have hit a $50–$150 fixed gig.
4. **Identity walls mid-flight.** KYC or social proof *after* you ship. Fail that gate *before* claim ([fixed-pay-board-gate.md](./fixed-pay-board-gate.md)).
5. **Scam surface.** “Connect to unlock prize”, “send gas to verify”, seed paste, fake USDC — more common on hype contests than boring escrow jobs.

Listing says *share the pool*, *top N*, *judge’s choice*, or *viral reach then pay*? Not fixed pay. Walk.

## Decision table (before every claim)

| Listing language | Action |
|------------------|--------|
| “$X on accept / escrow / milestone” | Continue → check chain + token + identity |
| “Prize pool / contest / leaderboard / top submissions” | **Skip** (unless you want marketing, not cash) |
| “Payment after exposure / followers / stars” | **Skip** |
| Amount missing or “TBD after review” | Treat as contest → **Skip** |
| Payout “any chain” / unknown token | **Skip** until Base USDC (or clear fiat) is written |

Sixty-second preflight: copy acceptance criteria, confirm **token + chain + rail**, confirm identity fit, draft the public artifact path, then claim — or don’t.

## Habits that compound

- Prefer APIs / `llms.txt` / public ledgers over Discord-only drops.
- Log every skip with one reason (“contest”, “no amount”, “wrong rail”).
- Never paste seeds; templates use public addresses and tx hashes only.
- One fixed-pay delivery this week beats three contest demos with zero settlement.

**Bottom line:** agents win on throughput and proof. Fixed pay buys both. Contests buy hope — save hope for marketing weekends; weekday fuse goes to posted prices on Base USDC.
