# Free lead magnet: Base gas for claims (dust ETH)

Why **claim / receive / approve** txs on Base need a little **ETH for gas** even when the bounty pays **USDC** — and how freelancers fund that dust safely. Legal, high-level ops only.

**Hard rule:** Never paste a seed, private key, keystore, or hardware PIN into a website, chat, agent prompt, or “gas faucet” form. Agents may draft notes; **humans** confirm explorers and sign.

## Why USDC payouts still need ETH

On Base (and other EVM chains), **every state-changing transaction** is paid in the chain’s **native gas token**: **ETH on Base**, not USDC.

| Action | Who pays gas? | Notes |
|--------|---------------|--------|
| Someone **sends you** USDC (simple transfer **to** you) | **They** pay | You need 0 ETH to *receive* |
| You **claim** from a contract / escrow / merkle drop | **You** pay | Claim = you submit a tx |
| You **approve** a spender, then claim | **You** pay (often 2 txs) | Common on claim portals |
| You later **swap / bridge / withdraw** USDC | **You** pay | Keep a small ETH buffer |

A wallet with **USDC and 0 ETH** can *hold* tokens but **cannot** submit claim, approve, or many “complete payout” steps. “Pay in USDC” boards do not sponsor your gas unless they use sponsored / account-abstraction flows.

**Native USDC on Base (re-verify):** `0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913` · chain id `8453`.

## How little ETH is “enough”? (order of magnitude)

Base is an L2: simple txs are usually **cheap** vs Ethereum mainnet, but fees still move with congestion and call complexity.

**Rough, non-advice working habits** (verify live fees in your wallet — not a quote):

- **Inbound-only USDC receive:** 0 ETH required to accept the transfer.
- **One claim or one approve:** often cents-level ETH at quiet Base fees; plan for **several** simple txs, not exact gas for one.
- **Claim + approve + small follow-up:** buffer for a handful of retries so one spike does not strand the payout.

**Practical habit:** keep a **small ETH dust** on the same Base address you use for claims. If a UI asks for **large** ETH, a seed, or “deposit ETH to unlock USDC,” treat it as a **scam signal** — see [wrong-network recovery](./WRONG-NETWORK-RECOVERY.md).

## Safe ways to fund dust (legal / high-level)

Goal: get a **small amount of ETH on Base** to **your** public address.

### 1. CEX withdraw to Base

1. On an exchange you already use, buy or hold a little ETH.
2. Withdraw **network = Base** (not Ethereum mainnet unless you intend mainnet).
3. Paste **your** Base address; compare first 6 + last 4 offline.
4. Small test if the venue or amount is new; then top up.
5. Confirm on [basescan.org](https://basescan.org) that ETH arrived on **Base**.

If your venue has no Base withdraw, use another path — do not invent unsupported networks.

### 2. Bridge notes

- Bridge only via URLs you typed from **official docs** / bookmarks — never Discord/Telegram “bridge” links.
- You still need gas on the **source** chain to start the bridge.
- Dust-sized first when testing a new bridge; confirm on the **Base** explorer afterward.

### 3. Friend / teammate send

- Share only your **public** Base address + “need dust ETH for gas, Base only.”
- They send **ETH on Base**; you verify the hash on Basescan.
- Never “verify” by sending funds to a stranger who offered free gas.

**Avoid:** fake gas stations that want a seed or unlimited approval; paying strangers to “top up gas”; wrong-network withdraws then panic “recovery” tools.

## Checklist before accepting on-chain bounties (0 ETH wallet)

- [ ] Payout is **Base** (`8453`) + **native** USDC (contract above) — or the real chain/token is written down.
- [ ] Wallet has **enough ETH on Base** for claim + one retry + any approve (live fee estimate).
- [ ] You control the address; first 6 / last 4 match your offline note.
- [ ] Claim URL is from the board’s official domain / docs — not a DM.
- [ ] You know if **inbound USDC** alone suffices (passive receive) vs **you must claim** (you pay gas).
- [ ] Scam filter: no seed, no “pay ETH to release USDC,” no rushed unlock.
- [ ] After success: save tx hash; use [agent payout proof](./AGENT-PAYOUT-PROOF.md) if a board/seller needs email proof.
- [ ] Invoicing instead of claims? Use [sample invoice](./SAMPLE-INVOICE-BASE-USDC.md) — client pays USDC; you need ETH when *you* move funds.

**Skip / renegotiate** if the board needs a claim tx and you cannot fund Base ETH today.
